Neurovascular and Stroke Institute

The purpose of our neurovascular and stroke centers is to provide the complete spectrum services from diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation. Diseases and disorders which fall under neurovascular and stroke are treated under three areas of expertise:

Brain Aneurysm Institute
Carefully orchestrated care for brain aneurysms and brain hemorrhage (subarachnoid).

Stroke Centers
All of the North Shore-LIJ Health System hospitals are New York State-designated stroke centers that utilize medications like t-PA (a "clot-buster"), allowing our stroke teams to improve the outcomes of a stroke. Some of our facilities are now performing life-saving stroke interventions and removing clots utilizing the latest technology. This helps extend the window of time in which life-saving treatments can be offered. Our stroke centers also focus on stroke prevention and stroke education.

Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM)
This is typically a congenital defect in which arteries and veins are tangled and not connected by capillaries. An AVM can occur in many different parts of the body, but those located in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord (neurological AVM) can affect the entire body.
