STATEN ISLAND, NY - At the June 22 annual meeting, Ronald J. Mazzucco, Esq., was elected chair of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Staten Island University Hospital. Mr. Mazzucco also serves on the Board of Trustees of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, of which SIUH is a member. Concomitantly, Frederick A. Volk became Co-chair, with Mazzucco, of the SIUH Foundation Board. The term of office for both is two years.

Mr. Mazzucco’s tenure on the University Hospital Board dates back to 1978. In the ensuing years, he held the position of Vice Chairman and has served as the chair of several Board committees including Finance, By-Laws, and Public Affairs-Development. Previously, he had served two terms as president of the former Staten Island University Hospital Association. A longtime Staten Islander, Mazzucco said he felt privileged for the opportunity to lead the Board as the hospital continues development of new programs and facilities aimed at meeting the needs of the growing Staten Island community.

“At Staten Island University Hospital we go beyond our healing mission in setting nationally recognized standards in patient care,” said Mazzucco. “Our goals are directed at keeping Island healthcare on the leading edge,” he said.

An active member of the Staten Island and healthcare communities, Mazzucco was a 2003 recipient of the United Hospital Fund’s Distinguished Trustee Award, one of 37 New York City hospital trustees honored for leadership, guidance, and extraordinary service to the City’s not-for-profit hospitals.
Mazzucco noted: “We owe a debt of gratitude to the NS-LIJ Health System, as-well-as our SIUH medical staff, the diligence of the hospital’s leadership and the guidance of former Board chairs Gary Geresi, John Shall, Roger Acker, and Patrick McDermott over the past 15 years.”

Frederick A. Volk was elected to serve as co-chair of Staten Island University Hospital’s Foundation Board. Mr. Volk is a fourth generation Staten Islander, who served on the board of directors of the SIEDC, Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army, the Boys Scouts of America and St. Johns University. Volk has over forty years experience in the banking industry, his last position being held at Staten Island Savings Bank.

Volk has been associated with SIUH Foundation Board since 1983. He served as Chairman of the Board of Richmond Memorial Hospital which merged with Staten Island Hospital in 1987 to form SIUH.
In 2008, The Council of the City of New York honored Volk upon his retirement from the Board of Directors of the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) citing his distinguished leadership and many contributions to the community at-large.

The Hospital’s Foundation Board is responsible for developing and implementing philanthropic initiatives and relationships that support vital SIUH programs and contribute to the well-being of Staten Islanders. The Foundation was instrumental in leading the effort to raise $30 million for the new Elizabeth A Connelly Emergency and Trauma Center opened in June of 2009, and for the soon to open Regina M. McGinn, MD Education Center.
