North Shore-LIJ Creates Department of Population Health

May 18, 2010

GREAT NECK, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the creation of a Department of Population Health and the appointment of Jacqueline Moline, MD, MSc, as chair and vice president.

“In this new position, Dr. Moline is collaborating with North Shore-LIJ’s leadership to develop initiatives aimed at promoting and engaging health and wellness for North Shore-LIJ’s more than 38,000 employees as well as the communities we serve throughout the New York metropolitan area,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s chief medical officer.

Dr. Moline comes to North Shore-LIJ from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan, where she was the vice chair and an associate professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine, as well as an associate professor of Internal Medicine. She served as the director of Mount Sinai’s Clinical Center of Excellence within the World Trade Center (WTC) Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program, which has diagnosed and treated more than 18,000 WTC responders in the New York metropolitan area and across the United States.

An expert in occupational medicine, Dr. Moline plans to recruit a team that will include occupational physicians, epidemiologists, industrial hygienists, an industrial psychologist, an ergonomist and occupational nurse practitioners to develop a health and wellness strategy for North Shore-LIJ’s workforce and the community at large.

“We’ll be identifying creative ways to improve the health of North Shore-LIJ’s employees and their families, which will serve as a model for expanding our health and wellness initiatives into the community,” Dr. Moline said. “We want to figure the ‘whys’ of how people get sick and then determine how we can get people energized about wellness.”

In essence, she said, the new Department of Population Health will promote research and targeted interventions that will examine how various lifestyle and occupational factors can affect an individual’s health, and work to help transform their lives through healthy eating, regular exercise, stress reduction, and finding a healthy balance between work and family.

Dr. Moline received her medical degree from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine, Occupational Medicine.
