STATEN ISLAND, NY– Seeking to enhance healthcare for seniors on Staten Island, the North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the signing of a clinical affiliation agreement with ArchCare at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, a 300-bed skilled nursing care facility.
“In Staten Island and in other communities we serve, the population of older residents is expected to increase significantly in the next two decades, requiring a range of comprehensive healthcare services to meet the unique needs of the elderly,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Sharing our expertise with Carmel Richmond and other facilities that provide outstanding care and services to seniors is in the best interest of individuals, families and our communities.”
“As the senior population on Staten Island and throughout the region continues to grow, it’s more important than ever for residents to have seamless access to a full spectrum of healthcare options, from inpatient hospital and nursing home care to the home- and community-based alternatives that consumers and public policy are increasingly supporting,” said Scott La Rue, ArchCare’s president and chief executive officer. “This affiliation will ease patients’ transition from hospital bed to rehabilitation and other less restrictive forms of care, while facilitating the sharing of insight and resources to benefit those we serve.”
“As one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers, the North Shore-LIJ Health System, in close coordination with Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), is pleased to partner with a top-flight skilled nursing care facility such as Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, where we will have the opportunity to share resources and know-how, collaborating on quality initiatives and clinical programs to enhance care for seniors in our community,” said Anthony Ferreri, president and chief executive officer of SIUH.
SIUH has a longstanding working relationship with Carmel Richmond, with a fluid continuum of care between the facilities. SIUH provides emergency and inpatient care to Carmel Richmond’s residents as well as laboratory services. Many of the nursing home’s credentialed medical staff members are affiliated at SIUH. Additionally, SIUH specialists serve as consultants to Carmel Richmond patients in need of cardiology, urology, oncology and other services. The nursing home relies on the support of services offered by SIUH’s Cancer Services Program with a spectrum of cancer therapies provided at the hospital’s Sanford R. Nalitt Institute for Cancer and Blood-Related Diseases.
Among the services that North Shore-LIJ will provide under the new agreement are: rapid intervention and referrals to specialists support on clinical care and quality management issues, geriatric medical resident education; home care services, hospice care services, and palliative care/end-of-life care. SIUH and Carmel Richmond are working towards developing a relationship in which the hospital’s pain management team would provide consultations.
“Our affiliation with North Shore-LIJ formalizes what has long been a highly cooperative and mutually beneficial working relationship between our two institutions,” said Sister Maureen Murray, O. Carm., administrator and executive director of Carmel Richmond. “We look forward to continuing to work with Staten Island University Hospital and the entire healthcare community to offer Staten Island residents enhanced access to the highest quality and most cost effective and clinically appropriate care.”
