North Shore LIJ Recruits Brain Cancer Specialist
MANHASSET, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience today announced the appointment of neuro-oncologist Tulika Ranjan, MD. Trained at Memorial Sloan-Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center in Manhattan, Dr. Ranjan will collaborate with other brain cancer specialists in North Shore-LIJ’s departments of Neurosurgery, Medical Oncology and Radiation Medicine in treating patients and offering clinical trials.
Dr. Ranjan completed her fellowship in neuro-oncology at MSK after finishing her residency in neurology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey. She is board certified in neurology and an active member of the Society of Neuro-Oncology, the American Academy of Neurology and the Indian Medical Association.
Dr. Ranjan will work in close conjunction with Michael Schulder, MD, director of the Cushing Brain Tumor Institute, vice chairman of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and co-director of the North Shore-LIJ Center for Sterotactic Radiosurgery and Radiation Therapy.
North Shore-LIJ’s Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience is a continuum of neuroscience programs involving a multidisciplinary team that combines science, research, clinical programs, surgical techniques, neuro-oncology and education to advance the care of brain tumors.
Neuro-oncologists are sub-specialist neurologists who have received specialized training in cancer care. They focus on treating patients with brain tumors, through chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or a combination thereof, and the neurological consequences of treatment. There are currently fewer than 500 fellowship trained neuro-oncologists practicing in the United States. “We’re pleased to attract such a talented physician as Dr. Ranjan to the Brain Tumor Institute, which continues to gain stature for its expertise in research and treating brain cancer, and training the next generation of world-class clinicians,” said Ronald Kanner, MD, chairman of neurology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center.
Dr. Ranjan specializes in benign and malignant brain tumors such as astrocytomas, brainstem gliomas, ependymomoas, glioblastoma multiforme, meningiomas, medulloblastoma, metastatic brain tumors, oligodendrogliomas and schwannomas.
