North Shore-LIJ Physicians Laud Attorney General Cuomo
On behalf of the North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) Medical Staff Society, Thomas Mauri, MD, left, and Simon Prince, MD, right, recently presented New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo with a plaque recognizing his work in investigating the methods used by insurance companies to set healthcare reimbursement rates. During a news conference at NSUH, Attorney General Cuomo announced the creation of a nonprofit entity called FAIR (Fair and Independent Research) Health that will work with a network of upstate healthcare researchers to establish a new independent system for setting reimbursement rates. Over the past year, the Attorney General secured a total of $100 million in settlements from major insurance companies, which relied on their own billing information database to intentionally skew out-of-network reimbursement rates downward, effectively shortchanging physicians and forcing patients to pay a disproportionate share of out-of-pocket costs. Members of the NSUH Medical Staff Society were among the first to bring the issue to Mr. Cuomo's attention during a meeting two years ago.
