Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) has developed a residency program designed to educate physicians to be primary providers of women's health care. Preparing our residents to provide comprehensive care to their patients, our program is structured to insure the development of expertise in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. The OB/GYN residency consists of four years of post-graduate education, providing progressive and thorough training in all skills related to our specialty while maintaining careful supervision conducted by a highly skilled faculty. 

Our program provides broad training in primary care and general obstetrics and gynecology, as well as significant experience in all the sub-specialty areas. This is achieved through wide exposure to the sub-specialties. In addition, regular, active participation through the entire four years of training in our outpatient continuity clinics prepares obstetrician-gynecologists to function as primary care physicians for their patients. 

 Residents have experiences at the Health System’s two major tertiary care hospitals; North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, both serving as area Regional Perinatal Centers. NSUH and LIJMC had a combined total of 10,984 deliveries in 2009 performed by our voluntary and full-time faculty. In 2009 there were approximately 7,400 gynecologic procedures done at the hospitals. Ambulatory services are also robust with a combined total of over 95,000 outpatient visits is 2009. Over 1000 IVF procedures are performed at the Center for Human Reproduction.

The program incorporates progressively graded opportunities to be the “responsible physician” for all patients. Senior residents have opportunities for extensive decision making while junior residents are directly supervised and supported in their responsibilities by the senior resident and an attending physician.

Our department stresses continuity of care throughout the training program. Each resident is assigned to a block of office hours in our outpatient continuity clinics during every year of the program. This enables a large component of the residency training experience to be devoted to the primary care of patients. Further, each resident is part of a team of healthcare providers that also includes attending physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers and other support staff. Our goal is to provide uninterrupted care for all patients in an office setting. Training is extensive in medical interviewing, patient communication, psychosocial aspects of care, as well as in patient counseling and education. The outpatient continuity clinics are under the supervision of a full-time attending physician who is present during office hours.

In addition to the emphasis on educating the residents in developing superb clinical and surgical skills, there is also an extensive didactic program and a strong mentoring program for the residents.

NSUH and LIJMC are the main clinical sites for the Hofstra/North Shore-LIJ College of Medicine enabling our trainees to take part in the educational process for these students. LIJMC is the Long Island Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) and maintains a close and meaningful relationship with AECOM including many joint programs, core clerkships and other teaching activities for AECOM medical students each year.

Physicians completing our residency program are well-equipped to practice the full range of the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology in a clinical and academic setting or to enter a sub-specialty fellowship program.
