Director of Rehabilitation

Barry Root, MD, the director of the Rehabilitation Division, earned his medical degree at Ohio State University. He came to Glen Cove right out of a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at what was then Nassau County Medical Center in 1987. It is the ORI’s good fortune that he stayed to help build the successful program we offer today. Dr. Root has a keen interest in new developments in the field and is an enthusiastic mentor to therapists and physiatrists in training here at Glen Cove. In addition to performing his administrative duties, Dr. Root is involved with patients on a daily basis.

The Rehabilitation Division is dedicated to bringing every patient back to his or her highest level of functioning. The approach is multidisciplinary; our team, including physiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational, physical, and recreation therapists, speech-language pathologists, and psychologists, meets to assess progress and consider new treatment options.

At the ORI we often point out that rehabilitation is not recuperation. It’s not lying in bed until you’re better; it’s working hard to get better. Every staff member is there to offer encouragement, support, and motivation, which inspires patients to push themselves to achieve goals thought unachievable.
