North Shore University Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has an extensive network of physicians who specialize in the following areas:
 

  • Ankle

    Ankle specialists are experts in treating fractures, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, impingement sprain and tendon disorders.

     
  • General Orthopaedic Surgery

    General orthopaedic surgery specialists diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.  These physicians can see acute musculoskeletal injuries and routine orthopaedic problems.  Treatments include minimally invasive and arthroscopy surgery for the spine, hip, knees, shoulders, ankles, elbows, and wrists.

     
  • Hand

    Hand surgery is the field of medicine that deals with problems of the hand, wrist, and forearm.  They care for these problems without surgery, and they are specially trained to operate when necessary.

    Many hand surgeons are also experts in diagnosing and caring for shoulder and elbow problems.  Hand surgeons are orthopaedic, plastic, or general surgeons who have additional training in surgery of the hand.

     
  • Hip

    Hip surgeons are experts at diagnosing and treating hip diseases which include osteoarthritis and hip fractures.  Treatments include total and partial joint replacement.

     
  • Knee

    Knee diseases such as ligament injuries, ACL injuries, and meniscus tears are common disorders that are diagnosed and treated by surgeons who specialize in the knee.  Treatments include total and partial joint replacement.

    Musculoskeletal Oncology or Orthopaedic Oncology services offer diagnosis and treatment services for the following conditions:

    • Metastatic disease of the musculoskeletal system

  • Shoulder

    Shoulder surgery can help with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff and other types of arthritis.  Surgical procedures for the shoulder include: Arthrodesis, Hemiarthroplasty, Osteocapsular Arthroplasty, Synovectomy, and shoulder replacement.

     
  • Spine

    Spine surgeons are physicians who receive special training in the diagnosis and treatment of the spine which include problems with the neck (cervical spine), mid back (thoracic spine), and low back (lumbar spine). 

     
  • Sports Medicine

    A sports injury refers to the kinds of injuries that most commonly occur during sports or exercise.  Some sports injuries result from accidents; others are due to poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warmup and stretching.

    Joint replacement, a surgical procedure to remove and replace an arthritic or damaged joint with an artificial joint, may be considered only after other treatment options have failed to provide adequate relief from pain and/or disability.
