Orthopedic Services at Syosset

Syosset Hospital's Department of Orthopedics has an extensive network of physicians who specialize in the following areas:

Ankle
Ankle specialists are experts in treating fractures, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, impingement sprain and tendon disorders.

Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a procedure in orthopedic surgery that utilizes instruments brought through small incisions to perform procedures in joints such as the shoulder and knee. Because incisions are smaller, surgery is generally less painful and rehabilitation is more rapid. Procedures such as rotator cuff repair in the shoulder and ligament reconstruction in the knee are routinely performed arthroscopically, thus allowing patients to go home on the same day of surgery.

Arthroscopy has also played a role in the making or confirming of a diagnosis as well as other procedures such as fracture fixation. Because of the continued advancement of technology, the development of other techniques that were previously performed using a traditional open procedure can now be done arthroscopically, expediting the rehabilitation of patients.

General Orthopedic Surgery
General Orthopedic specialists diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. These physicans can see acute musculoskeletal injuries and routine orthopedic problems. Treatments include minimally invasive and arthroscopy surgery for the spine, hip, knees, shoulders, ankles, elbows and wrists.

Hand
Hand surgery is the field of medicine that deals with problems of the hand, wrist and forearm. They care for these problems without surgery, and they are specially trained to operate when necessary.

Many hand surgeons are also experts in diagnosing and caring for shoulder and elbow problems. Hand surgeons are orthopedic, plastic or general surgeons who have additional training in surgery of the hand.

Hip
Hip surgeons are experts at diagnosing and treating hip diseases such as osteoarthritis, hip fractures, etc. Treatments include total and partial joint replacement.

Knee
Knee diseases such as ligament injuries, ACL injuries, meniscus (cartilage), anterior knee pain and miscellaneous knee problems are diagnosed and treated by surgeons who specialize in knees. Treatments include total and partial joint replacement.

Orthopedic Oncology

  • benign and malignant tumors of the bone andsoft tissues
  • metastatic disease of the musculoskeletalsystem
  • metabolic bone disease

Spine
Spine surgeons are physicians who receive special training in the diagnosis and treatment of the spine which include problems with the neck (cervical spine), mid-back (thoracic spine) and low back (lumbar spine). Treatments include: Kyphoplasty (cement injections) for osteopathic fractures, a same-day procedure offering rapid relief for back pain.

Sports Medicine
Surgeons with subspecialty training in sports medicine, in particular the shoulder and knee, are on staff at Plainview Hospital. Several of our surgeons are fellowship-trained and skilled in the arthroscopic procedures that can help patients to restore motion and return function.

Orthopedic sports medicine is a field of study within orthopedic surgery that deals with injuries and conditions associated with athletes. Common athletic or sports-related injuries include rotator cuff tears and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears of the knee.

Other conditions specific to athletes include overuse syndromes such as stress fractures and tendonitis, as well as instability of joints such as the shoulder and ankle. In addition to diagnosing and treating the above conditions, the sports medicine physician also has an understanding of other disciplines such as exercise physiology, physical therapy, nutrition and neurology.Furthermore, the sports medicine physician is specially training in certain procedures such as arthroscopy and in specialized rehabilitation techniques for sports-related injuries.

Total Joint Replacement
Joint replacement, a surgical procedure to remove and replace an arthritic or damaged joint with an artificial joint (called a prosthesis), may be considered only after other treatment options have failed to provide adequate relief from pain and/or disability.
