Paramedic Program
The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System's Paramedic Education Program consists of an extensive curriculum which runs over a period of approximately 14 months. This rigorous program meets and exceeds the training requirements set forth by the State of New York Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Bureau. Students receive ACLS, PALS, and PHTLS certifications, qualify to take the New York City MAC examination, as well as the National Registry Examination. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, students will be eligible to sit for the New York State certifying practical and written examinations. Classes are typically conducted three evenings a week from 6 to 10 pm at The Center for Learning & Innovation in Lake Success. This is a NOT an entry level course. Candidates must possess certification as a minimum of an EMT-Basic to apply.
The program consists of the following phases of study:
- Classroom
The classroom phase includes 560 hours of didactic, laboratory, and simulation practice. Lectures are presented by EMI Faculty and Practicing New York Area Medical & EMS Professionals.
- Clinical Rotations
The second phase of training consists of over 330 hours of clinical rotations throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
- Field Internship
The final phase of the program is a minimum of a 300 hour field internship program, during which students work under direct supervision of certified Paramedic Preceptors within the 9-1-1 emergency system.
Admission Requirements
- Current New York State EMT-Basic Certification
- At least six months of EMT work or volunteer experience
- Successful performance on program pre-tests, including:
- Basic EMT Knowledge
- Reading Comprehension
- Mathematics
- Receipt of course application, accompanied by a $100 non-refundable application fee
- Anatomy and Physiology 1

- Paramedic Original Course: $7000.00 (includes textbooks, BCLS, ACLS, PALS & PHTLS)
- Paramedic Refresher Course $875.00 *
