Cohen Children’s Medical Center of NY Mourns the Passing of “Lion King” Actress Shannon Tavarez

November 2, 2010

The physicians, nurses and other caregivers at the Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York are deeply saddened by the death of Shannon Tavarez. She was a remarkable and talented young lady who touched the lives of those she entertained, as well as those who cared for her over the past several months. While acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is one of the most common types of leukemia among adults, it is rare among children. We hope Shannon’s death focuses more attention on the need for further research on AML and other types of leukemia. We also hope it will inspire more people to become bone marrow donors, affording transplant opportunities for youngsters such as Shannon who may have benefitted from a successful match. On behalf of the children’s medical center, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Shannon’s family and friends, as well as her many fans.”
