Message from the Chairman
Welcome to the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Our department plays a pivotal role in the caring for individuals throughout their lifetime, thanks to the extraordinarily comprehensive clinical services provided by this large health system. We provide comprehensive services in essentially all aspects of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, including provision of all but the most infrequent of esoteric tests. Beyond meeting the immediate needs of the patients we serve, we also now have opportunity to help advance the public health agenda of our country. Precisely because clinical laboratory data on individual patients are generated by "pathology", it is now possible to help manage the populations of these patients and be leaders in “patient centered healthcare." It is our hope that this department can play a national leadership role in providing the highest quality care through the entire continuum of life, working to improve measurable outcomes in our regional population.
Likewise, our pathologists also play a constant role as educators in the health system, which beyond our own pathology residency program has over 2,200 house staff system-wide. In the establishment of the new Hofstra University School of Medicine (in partnership with North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health), our department is playing a central role in curriculum development and overall leadership, aiming for matriculation of our first medical students in July 2011.
Our vision is that Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in this health system will become one of the leading programs in the country. We will take utmost advantage of the fact that the North Shore-Long Island Jewish health system is totally unique: a large academic health system that provides healthcare throughout all stages of life, in one of the most robust and diverse population centers in the country.
