Pathology Residency at NSLIJHS

If you enjoy solving puzzles, Pathology might be your specialty of choice. Pathologists study and diagnose disease and disease-related problems and monitor the effects of therapy. It has been said that the pathologist is “the physician’s physician” because of the role they play as consultants to clinicians and their patients.

The NSLIJHS-Albert Einstein College of Medicine Pathology Residency Program is a fully accredited residency program that offers combined training in anatomic and clinical pathology in an integrated four-year program. Residents will have extensive exposure to subspecialty practice in Anatomic Pathology, including cytopathology, gynecologic pathology, genitourinary pathology, gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, and renal pathology, with a rotation in forensic pathology. Clinical Laboratory training is provided in clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, hematology, and blood banking/transfusion medicine. Specialized training in laboratory management is also provided, taking advantage of the major reference laboratory serving this 14-hospital health system. Residents will have opportunity to conduct clinical research projects, including training in research methodology and specialized research techniques such as molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, molecular cytopathology, immunopathology, and flow cytometry. Residents will have opportunity to participate in the teaching programs of the new Hofstra North Shore - LIJ School of Medicine (scheduled opening July 2011). Resident participation in regional and national pathology meetings is supported, particularly for the presentation of original scholarship. We also have an accredited fellowship program in cytopathology.
