Pauline's Story
My name is Pauline Johnson and I hail from the beautiful island of Jamaica. I migrated to the United States of America in September of 1992. When I came to this beautiful, vast country it was very different from my country. When I graduated from my secondary school I graduated with distinction in child-care. I went on to work with the Youth Services, which took me to four different clinics, and one hospital.
I am a caring individual and a self-starter and am motivated to believe and become the best at what I do. Because of my high level of motivation I studied diligently to become a CNA. I was certified in 1996 and worked for 4 years as a CAN, then I decided to continue my studies to improve myself and my qualifications.
In September 1998 I applied to the BOCES Adult Nursing Program. I was accepted. I studied and became an LPN, which was a step in the right direction. This decision was not always easy as it called for dedication, motivation and determination.
There were times when the tasks seemed too difficult to achieve. I felt like quitting. However, because of my dedication, motivation and determination to succeed, I pressed on with my love for working with the elderly. I love the wisdom of the geriatric patient and have benefited from their experiences. Through my persistence I achieved my LPN license.
One of the most intense debates within America' s health care system is about caring for the elderly. As the American population lives longer, the Baby Boomers of the 1940's live to a ripe old age, due to better health care facilities, cutting edge research and providing the best service for this section of the United States population. I am committed to working in the United States health sector and providing quality care for the elderly.
I appreciate the words of Florence Nightingale, suggesting the need for a campaign to improve the quality of nursing. This can only be achieved by becoming more qualified in the profession. "Nursing is most truly said to be a high calling, an honorable calling, honor lies in loving perfection, consistency and in working hard for it. Be ready to work patiently”. (Florence Nightingale 1873)
In the future I aspire to become a Registered Nurse. My desire is to make the best, do the best and be the best at what ever I do. My philosophy is to thine own self be true.
As a nurse I work at the Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation.
