Pediatric Surgery

The pediatric surgeons of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System deal with a full range of surgical procedures required in children and focuses on the unique physiology and anatomy of the young patient. A need is recognized, and a comprehensive approach focusing on it is utilized. Close cooperation with the patients referring physician is maintained at all times.

A same-day surgery unit at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York permits children to undergo treatment for many surgical problems without the necessity of an overnight stay in the hospital. This spares the child the trauma of hospitalization and permits convalescence at home. An educational visit several days prior to the scheduled procedure allows the child and parents a chance to become familiar with the facility and to learn what to expect on the big day. While in the hospital, parents are allowed to be with their child as much as possible. One parent is almost always allowed to be present in the operating room while their child is going to sleep. After surgery, children are brought to the pediatric recovery room and parents are allowed to see them shortly after their arrival. After recovery, children are discharged and are almost always home by the afternoon.

The Children’s Mini-Incision Surgery Center (Laparoscopic Surgery)

Traditionally, many operations have been performed using an incision large enough for human hands, suction tubes or other instruments. Now the same operation can be performed through tiny portals dramatically miniaturizing the incision and minimizing postoperative pain. Pediatric surgeons at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York now provide the most advanced minimally invasive surgery techniques for infants, children and adolescents. Our surgical team consists of four board certified pediatric surgeons and a nurse practitioner trained in pediatric preoperative and postoperative surgical treatment. Our team is available 24 hours a day for surgical consultations and care.

We also specialize in neonatal surgery, the correction and treatment of newborn congenital anomalies, pediatric oncologic surgery, the surgical treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal diseases, and the cases of the traumatically injured child.
