Physical and Occupational Therapy at NSUH

Our Physical and Occupational Therapy Department provides services for the wide variety of inpatients at North Shore University Hospital. Patients receive physical therapy/occupational therapy (PT/OT) services if they:

  • Are functioning at a lower level of activity than prior to admission
  • Require a discharge recommendation for inpatient rehabilitation, home therapy or outpatient therapy
  • Require training with assistive/adaptive devices
  • Are in need of splints for positioning and support
  • Require extensive wound care

A physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner will determine if a patient is in need of PT/OT services and write an order for a PT/OT consult. One of our courteous and professional physical/occupational therapists will meet the patient to evaluate their physical and functional abilities. The therapist will design an individualized plan of care, which may include:

  • Strengthening
  • Balance activities
  • Coordination exercises
  • Transfer training
  • Ambulation training
  • Stair negotiation training
  • Activities of daily living training
  • Patient and family education

There are also physical therapists that are specifically certified in wound care who provide comprehensive wound management services, including wound assessment, dressing recommendations, sharps debridement, whirlpool and vacuum-assisted closure therapy.

The therapist will work closely with the patient and the other members of the healthcare team to determine the best discharge plan.
