Our Hospitals

North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center serve as a complimentary pair of large tertiary/quaternary hospitals. The hospitals are in close proximity to one another (approximately 2 miles apart). Surgical residents at our program divide their time roughly equally between the two hospitals. Cohen Children’s Hospital is part of the Long Island Jewish Campus. There are two outpatient surgical centers that are also part of our system – Schwartz Ambulatory Center and the Center For Advanced Medicine. Over 7000 surgeries are performed at each ambulatory center annually.

Special Courses
A unique feature of NSLIJ is the Center for Learning and Innovation which allows for simulation-based training in a state of the art facility. This allows for a wide range of simulation from basic bedside procedures to laparoscopic skills labs with live tissue.

The program also sponsors specific simulator training in basic and advanced laparoscopy culminating in the completion of the FLS (Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery) course now mandated by the ABS. The “Citi course” is required and allows all surgical residents to participate actively in clinical research. Formal training in surgical sonography is also provided.
