PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND PHILOSOPHY

Members of the Psychiatry Research Division continue to develop programs and provide technical assistance and training in the methods for investigating schizophrenia, movement disorders, affective disorders, panic and obsessive compulsive disorders and child, adolescent and geriatric psychiatry.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goals and objectives of the Psychiatry Research Program are to conduct clinically relevant psychopharmacologic and biologic research in psychiatric disorders. Our primary emphasis is on improving treatment methods by enhancing the efficiency of treatments, reducing the risk of adverse effects of treatment, and delineating pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease.
PATIENTS SERVED
Inpatients and outpatients of the extremely diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic groups who live in this area are encouraged to participate in the Research Programs. Each study has specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects are eligible for studies based upon these criteria.
TREATMENT MODALITIES
Patients participating in those research programs that do not involve treatment changes are treated in accordance with the best clinical practice, inpatient or outpatient services.
Each study protocol contains a detailed description of research procedures; all study procedures are approved by the Psychiatry Research Protocol Review Committee and by the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Institutional Review Board before being implemented. A high priority is given to the maintenance of confidentiality. All studies abide by HIPAA compliance and confidentiality regulations pertaining to individual study participation and individual study results. Patients interact with research personnel according to the research procedures for the particular study. Studies that do involve treatment usually employ an interdisciplinary team approach to treatment, but the exact treatment offered varies from study to study based upon the study hypotheses being tested.
