Quality Awards and Recognition
- The North Shore-LIJ Health System is the proud recipient of the 2010 National Quality Healthcare Award from the National Quality Forum (NQF). Recognized for its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, transparent, patient-centered healthcare, the health system is the first in the New York metropolitan area to receive this prestigious award. NQF, which works to raise standards for healthcare, presents this annual award to an organization that is a national leader in delivering outstanding quality-driven healthcare. North Shore-LIJ was cited for successfully using performance measurement to drive quality improvement, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, and raising the bar of health system performance to deliver safe, effective and efficient care to the community it serves.

- The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s (NSLIJHS) comprehensive stroke program received the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s (NSHC) 2009 Excellence in Patient Safety Award, the top honor, for distinguished achievement in patient safety and quality improvement. North Shore-LIJ finished first among 24 submissions to NSHC, the membership association that represents Long Island’s 24 not-for-profit and public hospitals.
- North Shore University Hospital successfully completed a one day on-site survey from the Joint Commission and has received Disease-Specific Care Certification for Stroke. The survey process included demonstrating compliance with consensus-based national standards, effective use of established evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to optimize care and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement processes. They are the first hospital in the NS-LIJHS to receive this distinction.
- Glen Cove Hospital is the first in New York State -- and only the eighth nationwide -- to receive certification for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Management by the Joint Commission, a national healthcare accreditation organization. The prestigious recognition certifies that Glen Cove Hospital has met the standards of care specific to diabetes, which included a variety of initiatives to enhance care for hospitalized patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and to educate patients on self management of the disease.
- LIJ Medical Center ranks as the best hospital in New York for heart bypass surgery, according to the latest three-year report (encompassing data from 2004-06) released by the New York State Department of Health (DOH). LIJ was among only two hospitals in New York State – and the only one in the Queens/Long Island market – that had success rates that were significantly better from a statistical standpoint than the statewide average, earning DOH’s prestigious double-star ranking; the hospital had a risk-adjusted mortality rate of one percent for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery during that three-year period, the lowest in the state.
- LIJ Medical Center has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals in the specialty areas of neurology and neurosurgery. U.S. News based the hospital rankings on reputation, outcomes and such care-related factors as patient volume, nursing care, advanced technology and recognition by outside organizations.
- Glen Cove Hospital’s comprehensive cancer program recently received the specialty’s most prestigious honor - a three-year accreditation with commendation by the national Commission on Cancer (CoC), part of the American College of Surgeons.
- The North Shore-LIJ Health System creates the Institute for Clinical Excellence to nurture a deep-rooted culture in which patient safety is guaranteed. The Institute’s three-year strategic plans focus on five priorities: reducing unnecessary variation and overuse in care; improving care coordination and patient safety; integrating the continuum of care; improving the health of communities served by the health system; and increasing public trust by better engaging patients and families.
- North Shore University Hospital implements a video monitoring system to ensure caregivers are washing their hands, becoming the nation’s first hospital to use cameras to track compliance.
- The Janet and John Raggio Nephrology Institute’s Terry Tan is one of the recipients of IPRO’s 2009 Quality Awards. The Quality Awards, given annually by IPRO, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for New York State, recognize health care providers that demonstrate a commitment to improving health care services in the state.
- U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” ranks Schneider Children’s Hospital (SCH) among the nation’s top 30 children’s hospitals in the pediatric specialties of: diabetes and endocrinology, digestive disorders, respiratory disorders and urology.
- For the second consecutive year, North Shore University Hospital’s Stern Family Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation (Stern CECR) and the Orzac CECR (OCECR) received five star ratings from New York State and the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for superior care. In addition, CMS recently selected both facilities to participate in the new Nursing Home Value-Based Purchasing Demonstration Project.
- Huntington Hospital becomes the first Long Island hospital to earn Magnet status for excellence in nursing services twice.
- Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is named a top performer in the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services/Premier Healthcare Alliance. SIUH is the only New York hospital to receive an award in four out of the five areas studied: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, open heart surgery, and hip and knee replacement surgery.
- Also for the second straight year, U.S. News and World Report ranks The Zucker Hillside Hospital among the nation’s top 20 psychiatric hospitals.
- Thomson Reuters names North Shore University Hospital one of the Top 100 Hospitals® for cardiovascular care, the only New York hospital to make the list among teaching hospitals with cardiovascular residency programs.
- Syosset Hospital is designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
- The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at North Shore University Hospital is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, becoming the first and only accredited adult transplant unit on Long Island.
- Schneider Children’s Hospital Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program is one of a select group of such programs nationwide to be accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy in recognition of its overall excellence.
- Huntington Hospital implements new technology — a surgical tracking board — to improve communication regarding surgical patients while maintaining privacy and anonymity.
