Quality Initiatives

At North Shore-LIJ, quality defines who we are and how we measure our success.

Each year, we create priorities for improvement based on our prior performance, industry trends and clinical developments. You will notice an emphasis on quality, patient safety, and infection prevention. By partnering with patients, families, and our clinical professionals, we promote continuous improvement and clinical excellence.

Our Position on Serious Adverse Events
The NS-LIJ Health System is committed to providing safe, high quality healthcare. Yet despite our best efforts to continuously improve, preventable adverse events, though rare, do occur. When they do, we commit to open disclosure and apology to the patient and family.

The Patient Safety Institute (PSI)
The Patient Safety Institute (PSI) provides state-of-the-art learning for healthcare professionals. We believe the U.S. Institute of Medicine's estimate that 100,000 people die every year from medical errors and hospital-acquired infections is unacceptable. The health system has created a goal of zero tolerance for medical errors and infections and believes that clinical training plays a key role.

The Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI) "Five Million Lives" Campaign
"Do no harm" is a fundamental principle for healthcare providers. Our goal is to prevent patient harm and injury by working with other hospitals across the country in this national campaign.

Rapid Response Teams
Rapid Response Teams, based in each of our hospitals, act asa support system to our nurses and physicians when they have a concern about a patient's condition. Our goal is to reduce cardiac arrests and save livesthrough early interventions. North Shore-LIJ participates in the Greater New York Hospital Association Collaborative and has presented our work at national and international conferences.

Pressure Ulcer Prevention
Our track record in preventing and managing pressure ulcers, more commonly known as bedsores, has been a long-standing one that has been recognized by the Joint Commission and replicated across the country. Our goal is to eliminate pressure ulcers by preventing skin breakdown.

Behavioral Health
Another goal of the health system is to provide high quality services to the behavioral health population. To this end, the Quality Management Department provides leadership and evaluates risk areas within the behavioral health inpatient and outpatient areas.

Service Excellence Initiatives to Ensure the Patient Comes First
Building on past initiatives put in place to improve patient satisfaction at its hospitals, the North Shore-LIJ Health System is moving ahead with aggressive steps to significantly enhance customer service, and hold employees and managers accountable for achieving service excellence standards.

Advanced Clinical Information Systems:Electronic Medical Records (EMRs)
The North Shore-LIJ Health System is installing an advanced clinical information system to automate and streamline the flow of information between all of your care providers.
