What kind of treatment is available?

When an adolescent is newly referred to the program, a comprehensive evaluation is performed. This initial evaluation may take up to two full days to complete and includes:

Once the evaluation is complete, we will meet with the family to provide feedback and to discuss treatment options. The RAP Clinic offers a full range of treatment services, including:

FEE INFORMATION: Fees for the RAP Program are offered on a sliding scale based on income. Many insurance plans are accepted, however you are responsible for necessary co-payments. Insurance and other fee-related issues are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Interviews
The interviews involve answering questions about each youngster's life and how he/she is functioning. We ask about school functioning as well as about relationships with friends and family. Interviews take from 2.5 to 4 hours, and are conducted separately for each youngster and parent. It is important to get a complete picture, so that we can make an accurate diagnosis and plan appropriate treatments.

Neurocognitive Assessment
The neurocognitive battery evaluates how certain areas of the brain work, and includes assessments of memory, reasoning ability, and motor performance. These assessments involve computer measures and written tests. The neurocognitive measures have been selected specifically to screen for problems in cognitive functioning that may be related to emotional difficulties.

Brain Imaging
Adolescents in the RAP Program are eligible to participate in an optional research study that utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the structure of the brain, and changes in brain structure over time. This form of MRI exam takes about one hour, during which time the participant may relax, close his/her eyes, and listen to their favorite CD, while the MRI scanner takes pictures of the brain.

Individual/Family Therapy
Staff psychologists provide individual therapy on a weekly or as needed basis. Sessions are typically 45 minutes in length, and often include parent contact. Clinic appointments are available Monday through Friday with some evening hours. A variety of therapeutic approaches are used including cognitive-behavioral interventions, interpersonal psychotherapy, and social skills training.

Group Therapy
Social skills groups for youngsters of various ages are conducted on weekday evenings. Sessions are 55 minutes in length and occur on a weekly basis. Social skills are taught through group discussions and interactive role-playing. Groups are open to new members on a continual basis.

Medication Management
When indicated, medication is prescribed by child and adolescent psychiatrists in the RAP program. Initial appointments are held at the Ambulatory Service of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and are one hour in length. Subsequent appointments are 20 minutes. Appointments are typically scheduled on a monthly basis.
