Dr. Narayan oversees all neurosurgery programs within the North Shore-LIJ Health System, including 18 full-time neurosurgeons and more than 30 voluntary neurosurgeons at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center. As director of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute, he has responsibility for all the neurosurgical and neurological institutes and programs within the health system.
Dr. Narayan came to North Shore-LIJ from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and The Mayfield Clinic, where he was the Frank H. Mayfield Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery. Prior to that, he was chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia. Dr. Narayan also served on the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston.
A diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Narayan’s professional affiliations include membership in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, The Society of Neurological Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Narayan’s research interests include head injury and brain tumors. He has published more than 110 papers and over 50 book chapters, as well as co-edited a noted textbook, Neurotrauma. He also helped develop the national Traumatic Brain Injury Management Guidelines.
Dr. Narayan has held more than 60 visiting professorships and honored lectureships in several countries. He is a recipient of the Brain Injury Association’s William Fields Caveness Award given in recognition of contributions to the field of neurosurgery. In addition, he has been listed multiple times in Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Narayan received his medical degree from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA, and a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.
