Rotation Overview

Due to the complexity of the modern-day healthcare system, the fellow will experience a wide variety of administrative and operational settings via a rotation through key facilities and departments within the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Since ample time must be allotted at each site in order for the fellow to gain valuable experience, time constraints will not permit the fellow to rotate through every facility or department within the health system.

The sites are chosen from a set list by the administrative manager and assigned to incoming fellows. From this selection, a rotation schedule is established. The facility and department leadership is aware of the educational objectives for the fellowship program and works to assure that each rotation meets these goals.

Rotations are divided into several general categories, including:

  • Hospital administration
  • Hospital support
  • Hospital — clinical
  • System ancillary services
  • System administration
  • System shared services
  • External rotations (various organizations and meetings)

These categories are further broken down into individual departments and services from which the fellow can choose. The external rotations also include attendance at meetings of agencies that interact with the health system, such as the Greater New York Hospital Association and the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council.

The fellow spends three months at each major rotation site. This schedule allows sufficient exposure to area administration and operations. The fellow spends the remainder of the time working with his or her mentor and other health system leadership, attending meetings and working on assigned projects.
