Run to Stop Asthma on May 30

May 18, 2009

JERICHO, NY – A five-kilometer run to benefit the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Beth Thalheim Asthma Center will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 30 at Jericho High School, 99 Old Cedar Swamp Rd.

The “Run Out Asthma” 5-K Run/Walk is being organized by Scott Simon, a senior at Jericho High School and the Greater Long Island Running Club to raise funds for the asthma center, located at 410 Lakeville Rd., New Hyde Park. Prior to the event, on Friday, May 29 at 4 p.m., Bob Schul, a 1964 Olympic gold medalist in the 5-K and an asthma sufferer, will speak at the Jericho Public Library.

Among the post-race activities planned for May 30 is a performance by the Long Island band Paging Grace. Participants and volunteers will be able to enjoy refreshments donated by local vendors. Participants will also receive a commemorative t-shirt and the opportunity to win raffle prizes. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each of the 16 age groups, which range from 14 years old and under through 80 and over.

In cooperation with the Nassau-Suffolk Chapter of the American Lung Association, the Beth Thalheim Asthma Center works to educate patients and physicians about the most up-to-date therapy and current research into the causes and treatments of asthma. The center is also part of a nationwide network that works to carry out large multicenter clinical trials. All proceeds from the event will go to the center.
