Schizophrenia/Psychotic Disorders
Schizophrenia involves a severe and disabling disturbance of the brain. It is a psychotic disorder that can profoundly impair thinking and judgment, perception and interpretation of reality, the ability to organize and communicate thoughts, and social and occupational functioning. There is a biological basis for this illness. Symptoms of schizophrenia usually appear in late adolescence and early adulthood. The course of the illness varies considerably from person to person. A combination of antipsychotic medication and psychosocial interventions are optimal treatments.
