Seymour Katz, MD, Receives Top Clinical Achievement Award in Gastroenterology

Seymour Katz, MD, an attending gastroenterologist at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, was recently honored with the Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished contributions to clinical gastroenterology.

Specific criteria for the award include, in addition to a career of distinguished clinical practice of gastroenterology, contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinical education, technological innovation, and public and community service.

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) presents the award to one member or fellow only when he or she merits the recognition.

Dr. Katz is a clinical professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from New York University (NYU) Medical School. He began his internship and first year of residency in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of medicine and the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.

In the middle of his residency, during the early phase of the Vietnam War, he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force. After finishing his service, Dr. Katz returned to medicine, where he became the chief medical resident at Albert Einstein. He completed his fellowship at Cornell University Medical College, New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute.

Dr. Katz wrote the American College of Gastroenterology's position paper on the biliary lithotripsy, ACG's Handbook on IBD Diagnosis Management, and The Gastroenterologist Guide to Osteoporosis Diagnosis Management. He has served as president of the ACG. He is a master of the ACG and a recipient of its Samuel Weiss Award.
