August 22, 2006

In conjunction with the expansion of its radiation oncology services, Southside Hospital has named Edward E. Mullen, Jr., MD, medical director and chief of its radiation oncology division and announced that radiation oncologists Louis Potters, MD and John W. Ames, MD, have joined the hospital as radiation specialists.

Southside Hospital, a member of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System, has invested over one million dollars for upgrades and the addition of Mammosite/HDR radiation therapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)services. Mammosite HDR is a breast cancer treatment that improves the speed and accuracy of more traditional external beam radiation therapy.

IMRT is the ability to use a sophisticated computer and multi-leaf collimator to treat tumors with irregular shapes and sizes. This technique places the radiation field precisely into the tumor, sparing the surrounding healthy tissues and vital organs from the radiation dose. "Southside offers the community easy access to the very best radiation oncology services from highly trained and caring physicians," Dr. Mullen said. "As we continue to expand our program, the delivery of high quality, technologically superior care to our patients will remain our primary focus."

In addition to his appointment as Southside's medical director and chief of radiation oncology, Edward E. Mullen Jr., MD is a partner in Northern Boulevard Radiation Oncology, LLP in Flushing, NY. He also serves as director of radiation oncology at South Nassau Communities Hospital, co-medical director of Long Island Gamma Knife, president of New York Radiation Oncology Associates, PC, and assistant medical director of the New York Prostate Institute.

He completed his internship and residency at Columbia-Presbyterian in New York and held academic appointments as assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Pittsburgh and on the medical executive committee of Montefiore University Hospital (Pittsburgh).

He is a member of both the American College of Radiology and Radiation Oncology, as well as the European and American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.

Louis Potters, MD, joins Southside Hospital as an attending physician in radiation oncology. Dr. Potters is the associate director of radiation oncology at South Nassau Communities Hospital and medical director of the New York Prostate Institute. Previously, he was chief and associate attending, radiation oncology of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center.

A graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, Dr. Potters earned his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School-UMDNJ. He interned and completed his residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan and has held a variety of academic positions, including his current post as clinical associate professor of radiation oncology at SUNY-Health Center at Brooklyn and is a member of the American College of Radiology, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Brachytherapy Society among others.
