BAY SHORE, NY -- On Valentine’s Day, the day Southside Hospital became the first community hospital in New York State to perform cardiac surgery, the hospital's Chief of Cardiology Jean Cacciabaudo, MD, and Director of Safety Anthony Pellicone trained local kids in matters of the heart when they taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to nearly 100 middle grade students at St. Patrick’s School in Bay Shore. As part of the CPR training, each student received a CPR anytime kit, consisting of a Mini AnneTM CPR Learning Manikin and pledged to ‘pay it forward’ and teach at least three people the life-saving technique. Students will receive a certificate of completion when they complete their task.

In addition, Dr. Cacciabaudo presented an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the school on behalf of the hospital. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia and is able to treat them through defibrillation.
