Stanley Katz, MD
Senior Vice President, Cardiovascular Services, NorthShore-LIJ Health System, and
Chairman of Cardiology, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center
Dr. Katz oversees cardiovascular services for hospitals across the health system, and has succeeded in building one of New York State's most successful cardiac services programs. He also oversees New York's largest cardiac catheterization laboratory at NSUH.
Dr. Katz, who is also a clinical professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, joined NSUH in 1991 after serving for 10 years as director of cardiac catheterization at Winthrop University Hospital. He began his career as a staff cardiologist at LIJ Medical Center.
Dr. Katz has always been at the forefront of new technological advancements in the field. For example, in 1984 he began performing acute infarct angioplasty, even though the procedure did not become routine until 1994. Similarly, he began performing coronary stenting with biliary stents in 1993, more than a year before the procedure was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. In 1996, he formalized the process for storing digital archiving on cassette disks, which is now standard among hospitals. In 1998, he began incorporating flat panels into North Shore-LIJ's cardiac catheterization labs.
Dr. Katz is the author of 37 peer-reviewed publications and 51 abstracts. He has also been a primary investigator on 16 clinical studies, mostly involving intervention and acute myocardial infarction.
Dr. Katz earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa. He interned at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Israel, and completed his pathology residency at Boston University Hospital and his medical residency at LIJ Medical Center. Later, he was a cardiology fellow and a cardiology research fellow at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY.
