Summer Nursing Externship


The Nurse Extern program is designed to increase the clinical confidence and competence of nursing students.  Working under the direct supervision of a registered nurse clinical coach, the Extern can observe and participate in a variety of clinical experiences. Clinical work is supplemented with educational conferences.  Students can choose assignments in a number of clinical and specialty areas.  Opportunities are provided for selected observational experiences to enhance the clinical experience.

Program Requirements:


  • Students must be currently enrolled and in good standing in a nursing education program preparing registered professional nurses.
  • Completion of one clinical course is required.
  • Completion of employment application
  • Submission of two letters of reference.  One letter must be from school / faculty.
  • Copy of student transcript
  • Completion of interview and required health clearance (Must present original Social Security Card at time of interview)
  • Submission of letter “Why I want to be an Extern”
  • Positions available from member hospitals in the Long Island Area

What are the duties of a nurse extern?
- Deliver patient care and patient/family education in collaboration with the RN Clinical Coach.
- Assist in developing the patient care plan and post discharge care.

When will interviews be conducted?
Interviews will be conducted in March.

How much orientation will I receive?
There will be one week of orientation.

What department can I work in?
You will be assigned one department based on availability and any prior experience.

How many hours will I work?
Three 12½ hour day shifts a week.
