Surgical Innovation at Southside

Southside is constantly upgrading the resources and equipment in the operating rooms and its surgeons are adept at using the newest techniques. Some of our newer technologies:

  • Image-guided system for sinus and brain surgery for pinpoint accuracy in delicate procedures.
  • Endometrial balloon ablation to reduce heavy uterine bleeding. This technique works by inserting a balloon filled with a hot saline solution into the uterus where the heat destroys tissue responsible for the bleeding. This technique lessens the chance that a woman will need a hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus.
  • Brachytherapy, a technique that precisely places radioactive seeds within the body to destroy cancerous tumors. It is most often used to treat prostate cancer.
  • Cryotherapy for prostate cancer, uses a probe with a freezing tip on the end to destroy tumor cells.
  • Stenting for aortic aneurysms. This minimally invasive technique has dramatically changed surgery to eliminate an aneurysm, a weakening and bulging of the wall of an artery. A thin mesh tube, called a stent, is threaded into the aorta, the body's main artery, from a small incision in the groin. The stent strengthens the artery wall and decreases the chance of a life-threatening rupture.
  • Laser removal of varicose veins. In the past, laser therapy was used for spider veins, the small, surface varicose veins. New technology at Southside makes it possible to used this minimally invasive technique of larger vessels.
  • Expanded plastic and reconstructive surgery services.
  • Wound-healing and limb-salvage surgery at the Center for Wound Healing.
  • Procedures to restore and repair blood vessels at the Vascular Institute.
  • Sentinel node biopsy to help stage breast cancer and melanoma and avoid extensive surgery.
