NEW HYDE PARK -- For the fifth consecutive year, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC) has been ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation in U.S. News & World Report's 2011-12 “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” survey.
CCMC placed among the top 50 hospitals in all of the 10 different pediatric specialty areas surveyed in the magazine’s annual rankings, specifically: cancer care , heart care, neonatology, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, diabetes/endocrinology , gastroenterology, and nephrology. The hospital was ranked 12th in the nation for pediatric urology, its highest placement in the survey.
The U.S. News Rankings are based on a hospital’s reputation, medical outcomes such as death and infection rates, and care-related indicators such as patient volume, nurse staffing and availability of specialized programs. The magazine’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” edition is accessible online at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals.
“The US News & World Report rankings are significant and provide a valuable guide for parents looking to make decisions regarding high quality healthcare for their children,” said Arthur Klein MD, the hospital’s executive director and chief of staff, and the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s senior vice president of children’s services. “Being ranked for five straight years as one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals is testament to the excellent and compassionate care provided by our physicians and nurses. It is one of the reasons the Cohen Children’s Medical Center is a destination hospital for children from around the world.”
To meet the growing need for specialized pediatric services, a $120 million, 100,000-square-foot pavilion is being built at CCMC. The six-story structure, due to be completed in 2012, will include a pediatric emergency center, a 25-bed medical-surgical unit and a 25-bed pediatric intensive care unit.
