Welcome to The Department of Surgery

The surgeons in the Department of Surgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center are dedicated to render comprehensive surgical care for adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients. To provide and maintain state-of-the art expertise and equipment, the department is divided into six subspecialty divisions and sections/programs in each of the divisions. All physicians are specialists in their areas, and teaching appointments are through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Central to our mission is patient experience and patient safety. Towards this goal, we have implemented a novel program in hospital surgical patient safety, called "Continuum of Care in Surgery" that transcends all specialties. This program enables us to deliver timely and appropriate high-intensity care throughout the patients' hospital stay irrespective of location.

The divisions are: General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Critical Care/Trauma, Plastic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery  and Transplantation. The Division of General Surgery comprises sections of surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery and breast diseases.

The Division of Vascular Surgery comprises several programs: endovascular surgery, peripheral arterial disease management, vein surgery, wound care  and podiatric surgery. The division of plastic and reconstructive surgery  includes cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, microvascular surgery, and pediatric plastic surgery, including the Hagedorn Center for Cleft Lip and Palate. The transplant division recently launched a superb kidney transplantation program.

To learn more about our programs of excellence within these divisions, please visit Programs of Excellence. We place emphasis on clinical trials in order to find new approaches to care forour patients better. For example, we are currently enrolling patients to prospective studies that utilize novel tumor ablative strategies for primary and metastatic liver tumors in combination with new targeted chemotherapeutic agents.
