Services

Obstetrical Care

Comprehensive pre-natal and obstetrical care is offered to women anticipating normal as well as high-risk deliveries.

Routine pre-natal care at the Women's Comprehensive Health Center is provided by a staff of well-trained and experienced obstetricians who guide the pregnant woman and her family through each trimester of pregnancy. A variety of services are available, including genetic counseling, fetal monitoring, sonography and nutritional counseling. A strong emphasis is placed on patient education regarding pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding and newborn care.

The care of the "high-risk" mother optimally begins prior to conception. Pre-pregnancy counseling is offered to women with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and renal disease. Specialists in maternal-fetal medicine meet with the patient and provide consultation to her physician to formulate a comprehensive program to ensure an optimal pregnancy outcome.

Women who are pregnant with high risk factors are cared for by a team of specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, as well as specialists from other medical disciplines. Problems are identified early and optimal obstetrical surveillance and management is provided to assure the best possible outcome for both the mother and child.

The use of fetal sonography, Doppler blood flow measurements, non-stress testing and biophysical profiles enables the prenatal diagnosis and care of a wide variety of fetal conditions.

When the all-important delivery date arrives, the Center for New Life at Long Island Jewish Medical Center provides the perfect setting for the baby's birth. It is a growing maternity unit with 13 labor/delivery/recovery rooms. It features flexibility and a relaxed setting for the mother to foster bonding with her baby and spend time with her family. Services are designed to educate, support and help the entire family during pregnancy, childbirth and the period following the baby's birth.

Oncology

In addition to providing surveillance and treatment for cancers of the reproductive organs (cervix, ovaries and uterus), the center focuses on all cancers common to women. On-site specialists offer expert surveillance of abnormal pap tests, as well as colposcopy when indicated.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Comprehensive care for patients with fertility problems and menstrual irregularities is provided. Ultrasound testing is available to monitor ovulation induction and to assess abnormalities of the pelvic organs.

The Center for Human Reproduction

Urogynecology

The Division of Urogynecology offers a full spectrum of care for women dealing with urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and other pelvic floor problems. Targeted diagnostic testing is performed, including full gynecologic examination as well as bladder testing, discussion of treatment options and implementation of an effective plan of management consistent with the patient's condition, goals and wishes. Emphasis is placed on multi-modality conservative, non-surgical methods treatment.

Surgery

Surgical services are available at the center in the form of consultation and minor procedures such as endometrical, cervical, vulvan biopsies and fine needle aspirations.

Mental Health Programs

Psychiatric Evaluation is available for the full range of psychiatric disorders. Treatment or referral is offered to each patient. Pharmacologic treatment and/or pyschotherapy is available for anxiety, depression, mental health issues surrounding menstruation, pregnancy, and the post partum period. The center also treats those suffering from anorexia and bulimia.

Nutrition

There is a nutritionist on staff who will provide individual counseling and guidance to patients interested in a healthier diet or weight control.

Health Education

The center will serve an important role in educating women about their own well-being. Physicians and nurses provide "one-to-one" education to the patient, resource rooms with books and videos offer reinforcement and supplementary material, and on-site and community-based health education programs offer another opportunity for education.
