A Family’s Bout with Brain Aneurysms Inspires Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project

MANHASSET, NY – Jake Early, a 17-year-old Life Scout in Troop 482 in Floral Park, NY is trying to attain Eagle Scout status, the highest rank in Boy Scouting. To be considered, Jake has to complete an Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project and has chosen brain aneurysm awareness in honor of his aunt, who passed away of a brain aneurysm in 2002. In 2008, Jake’s grandmother also suffered from a brain aneurysm and survived, thanks to Avi Setton, MD, chief of interventional neuroradiology at the Cushing Neuroscience Institute’s Brain Aneurysm Center at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, NY.
As part of Jake’s Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, he raised $2,500. A portion of the money was used so Jake could make 250 hospitality necessity bags, as well as a dozen picture frames with inspirational sayings. The collection of picture frames, entitled “Believe in Miracles Everyday,” will be hung in the family waiting area of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute’s Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH).
At a recent presentation of the hospitality bags and picture frames, Jake said, “This project means the world to me since brain aneurysms greatly affected my life.”
Celia Wells, RN, director of neuroscience patient care services at NSUH, expressed thanks, saying, “We are so fortunate that Jake has taken personal interest in our patients and their families. The hospital staff is so grateful for the time and compassion Jake has put into making these beautiful picture frames and hospitality necessity bags which will bring hope and serenity for families who are in crisis.”
