Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency training program at the Hofstra North Shore – LIJ School of Medicine. Medical education at every level is one of the core values of our health system. Surgical education is one of the primary missions of the Department of Surgery. The launch of the Hofstra North Shore – LIJ School of Medicine is the final step in the evolution of the Health System and our Department to a full academic center.
The combination of two large tertiary hospitals provides ample volume and variety of surgical cases. Cutting edge technologies including robotics and advanced laparoendoscopic techniques are being utilized routinely. The Feinstein Institute provides an on campus, world-class, biomedical research resource. The Center for Learning and Innovation includes a state of the art simulation center and extensive bioskills lab both of which are at our disposal for use in surgical resident education.
We offer 8 categorical and approximately 16 preliminary resident annually. We provide the opportunity for time off for basic science research to a interested residents. Our residents graduate with approximately 1000 operative cases, ready for fellowship or general surgical practice. Our residents routinely present at national and international conferences and the Department’s research productivity is substantial.
Our educational programs are diverse and frequently utilize videoconference technology to optimize convenience of the residents. We participate in the SCORE curriculum and have weekly basic science and clinical educational tracks. An outline of our conferences is included below. The faculty is committed to the education of our surgical residents.
The Health System leadership as well as that of the Department are clearly supportive of graduate medical education – essential for a healthy learning environment. Our graduating residents have all matched in their chosen fellowships for the past several years. Our NSLIJ fellowships include: vascular (2 per year for 2 years), colo-rectal (2), surgical critical care (1), minimally invasive surgery (1), cardiothoracic (2), pediatric surgery (1 per year for 2 years) and we have recently received approval for a plastic surgery residency to begin July 2012 (2 positions per year for a straight 6-year program).
Our commitment is to continue the rich tradition of surgical training here at North Shore – LIJ. We believe that ours is one of the finest surgical residencies in the New York metropolitan area and look forward to meeting you.
