Kohl’s Cares Program Helps Cohen Children’s Medical Center Support Anti-Obesity Programs

NEW HYDE PARK, NY– As part of its continuing partnership, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York and Kohl’s Department Stores have teamed up to educate families in local communities on the importance of healthy eating habits and curbing obesity in young people. This multifaceted community outreach program at CCMC provides community education, staff development, hospital operations support and community outreach services for both the general public and professionals. To date, Kohl’s has provided over $3 million in support to CCMC for this initiative.
The Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program is designed to help prevent childhood obesity using a multi-faceted approach. The hospital will work with local school districts and implement the following components: introduce the Active Kids Program, a year-long fitness and nutrition program; offer outreach to parents and caregivers to educate families about healthier food choices and ways to stay fit; implement a “bring your parents to school day” in which parents are given counseling and will have the chance to exercise with their kids; and counsel school staff regarding healthy eating choices throughout the school day.
To further illustrate the hospital’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle and to thank Kohl’s in a unique way, the students of the Gregory Hines Academy of IS 59 in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY recently presented an original musical sketch that dealt with the psychological trauma and physical dangers of being obese.

Kohl’s commitment to CCMC is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares program, which raises funds for children’s health and educational opportunities through the sale of special gift items. Net profits from the sales go to support children’s health and educational opportunities in the market areas served by Kohl’s. Kohl’s community outreach also includes Kohl’s Kids Who Care®, an annual youth volunteer recognition program, fundraising gift cards for local schools and non-profit youth groups, as well as an associate program to encourage volunteerism.
