LIJ Medical Center Service Guild Named Top Auxiliary in New York State

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. – The Service Guild of Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center was recently named 2011 Auxiliary of the Year in the large hospital category by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) for the ways the Guild enhances the welfare of the diverse communities it serves.
The Auxiliary of the Year Award, established by HANYS in 2007 to recognize the many ways that auxiliaries help strengthen New York State’s health care system, was awarded to LIJ during a luncheon ceremony at HANYS’ Annual Institute for Health Care Auxiliaries and Volunteer Leaders meeting in Albany. The LIJ Service Guild, run by a 29-member board, works with LIJ Hospital, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York and The Zucker Hillside Hospital .

“Our volunteers better connect us with the people we serve everyday,” said Denice Romero, director of volunteer services at LIJ Medical Center. “They are trained to work with patients and work hard to create and run meaningful social and medical programs within the hospital campuses and communities. We are thrilled to celebrate this award and its demonstration of the dedication of each and every member of the Service Guild.”
Serving the community for over 50 years, the participants of the LIJ Service Guild act as liaisons, friends, teachers and advocates of the community through a wealth of innovative patient-centered programs and specialties. Among other programs, the Service Guild supports:
- Senior Navigator, which assists seniors and their families find and access health and social services;
- Children at Risk, which provides help to children and adolescents in crisis who are socially withdrawn or aggressive;
- The Center for Hope, which provides free group counseling to children who have lost a family member, and
- A variety of other health and wellness programs for topics ranging from cancer to sports injuries.
