Travel Immunization Center at NSLIJ

The Travel Immunization Center at North Shore-LIJ is the First Stop for Thousands of Travelers

The Infectious Diseases Division at North Shore-Long Island Jewish is one of the largest and most comprehensive Travel Immunization Centers for international travelers on Long Island. The Travel Center has been in operation since 1985, and has provided thousands of travelers with important medical information for traveling abroad.

Each traveler is seen in consultation by one of the Travel Center's four physicians, all of whom are board-certified in infectious diseases. The physician assesses pertinent medical information, reviews the traveler's specific itinerary, and devises an immunization regimen for each individual's specific needs. Prescriptions for malaria prophylaxis, treatment for traveler's diarrhea, and prevention of altitude sickness are provided as part of this comprehensive service.

Each traveler receives an informational brochure with practical advice on mosquito repellents, recommendations regarding safe food and water consumption, jet lag, and many other issues in order to make the trip safer and more enjoyable. In addition, travelers are given an individualized printout of health advice and information for each country to be visited.

The Travel Center is stocked with all vaccines recommended for international travel including: diphtheria-tetanus, polio, typhoid (oral and injectable), yellow fever (State-licensed Yellow Fever Center), meningococcal meningitis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, and rabies. Most of these vaccines can be administered in a single visit, although a few require multiple visits.

International travel is a rewarding and exciting experience. It can and should be a safe and healthy one as well. If you would like to make an appointment, or need any information about the Travel Immunization Center at NSLIJ, please call (516) 562-4280.
