Orthopaedic Surgery at NSUH

A message from Stanley E. Asnis, MD
Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
North Shore University Hospital/Manhasset

Welcome to the North Shore University Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery encompasses several sites within the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.

North Shore University Hospital is a tertiary center that offers comprehensive patient care.  It is a Level I trauma center with an extensive Emergency Department, well equipped and highly technical main and ambulatory operating rooms and an excellent free-standing Rehabilitation Center.  State of the art medical back up is readily available including extensive surgical and medical intensive care units.  Our Orthopaedic Physicians offer expertise in general orthopedic surgery as well as highly specialized surgical procedures.

The Orthopaedic Surgeons at NSUH have lectured locally, nationally, and internationally.  Several have been at the forefront in the development of multiple orthopaedic devices.  Some of these include nationally-used total hip replacements systems, total knee replacements systems, cannulated screw fixation, universal screw fixation, bone anchors, and a cartilage regeneration system.  Most important is our dedication to patient care and to offer the best procedure with the most comprehensive medical back up to the individual.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has 64 actively practicing board certified orthopaedic surgeons on staff as well as seven Orthopaedic Resident and eight Physician Assistants. The department is sub-divided into eight sub-specialty divisions each with a division chief.  These include Education and Teaching, Total Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine, Spine Surgery, Pediatrics, Trauma, Hand, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Research and educational pursuits are actively encouraged for all members of our department. The main operating room at North Shore University Hospital is well equipped for routine as well as highly-specialized orthopedic procedures.  In 2008, a total of 2,993 orthopaedic cases were performed at North Shore University Hospital.  These consisted of 1,942 main operating room cases and 1,051 ambulatory cases.

A large volume of general orthopaedic operations and reconstructive surgeries including total joint replacements, spine surgery, and fracture fixation are performed weekly.   North Shore University Hospital remains a level I trauma center for New York State. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has developed an orthopedic trauma service in conjunction with the NSLIJ Orthopaedic Residency Program.  As part of this program, three Long Island Jewish Residents and three Peninsula Consortium Osteopathic Orthopaedic Residents rotate through this service throughout the year. The department utilizes the freestanding Schwartz Ambulatory Surgery Center. Ambulatory orthopedic cases include arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, ankle and virtually all hand and foot procedures.

Our orthopaedic clinics are very active. There is a weekly general orthopaedic clinic as well as monthly specialty clinics for sports, total joint, hand, foot/ankle, spine/scoliosis, trauma and pediatric orthopedics. There are 22 orthotists/prosthotists who are members of the Allied Health Professionals Adjunct Staff and who will render care to patients who require their services in conjunction with the Physical Therapy Department.

Rankings

North Shore University Hospital’s Orthopaedic Department has ranked in the top 100 Departments in the nation in the HCIA-Sachs and The Human Motion Institutes last Orthopaedic Benchmarks for Success Study.  This study analyzed information on 11 million Medicare Patients and data from nearly 1,200 hospitals.  NSUH Orthopaedics ranked in the top 40 programs in the nation in a university-affiliated hospital without its own freestanding residency.

In the HealthGrades New York 2007 statistics, NSUH Orthopaedics ranked ‘5 Stars’, the best and highest rating, in Total Hip Replacement, Partial Hip Replacement and Back and Neck Surgery (excluding fusion).  In all of the six categories studied our Actual Complication Rate was well below the mathematically Predicated Complication Rate for the severity of disease index. The Manhasset Campus of NSUH has the largest volume of hip fracture cases of any hospital on Long Island.
