Two North Shore-LIJ Orthopedists Named Among Top 125 Knee Surgeons Nationwide
GREAT NECK, NY – Two orthopedic surgeons from the North Shore-LIJ Health System were recently named to the “125 Outstanding Knee Surgeons” list published by Becker’s Orthopedic, Spine & Pain Management Review, a Chicago-based publication.
Nicholas A. Sgaglione, MD, chair of orthopedics at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset and LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park; and Giles R. Scuderi, MD, vice president of orthopaedic services at North Shore-LIJ, were selected for the Becker’s list. Their selection was based on leadership in the field of orthopedic surgery, awards they received from major organizations in the field, participation in professional publications and positions of service at hospitals and surgery centers.
The Becker’s list was created as a result of extensive research and recommendations from around the country from some of the most well-respected surgeons in the US. All surgeons included on the list received training at top medical schools and often completed knee and sports medicine fellowships at world-renowned institutions.
Dr. Sgaglione specializes in sports medicine and joint replacement. Over the last two decades, Dr. Sgaglione has held numerous leadership positions in orthopedic surgery at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. In addition to chairing the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NSUH and LIJ, he also serves as chief of the department’s Division of Sports Medicine. Dr. Sgaglione is a member of several professional societies and is president of the Arthroscopy Association of North American for 2012-2013. Dr. Sgaglione also holds the position of chairman and professor of orthopedic surgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Sgaglione received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery from the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute and Southern California Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Group in Van Nuys, CA. His community and sports involvement includes serving as a team physician for the US Merchant Marine Academy and two Long Island high schools as well as an orthopedic consultant to the US Ski Team, the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils.
Dr. Giles R. Scuderi has been with the North Shore-LIJ Health System for the last eight years. In addition to his orthopedic leadership role, he is an attending orthopedic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. Dr. Scuderi earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed his orthopedic residency at Lenox Hill Hospital. Following his residency, he further enhanced his education with a knee fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Following his training, Dr. Scuderi established an active practice in Manhattan and Garden City. He is an assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and directs an active knee fellowship program.
As a board certified orthopedic surgeon for over 20 years, Dr. Scuderi has extensive experience in adult knee reconstructive surgery with surgical techniques that include arthroscopic, minimally invasive and full open procedures. While he specializes in all disorders of the knee, he has pursued innovative developments in high flexion total knee replacement, gender specific knee designs and revision total knee replacements.
Dr. Scuderi was the first orthopedic surgeon on Long Island to implant the first knee replacement specifically designed to fit a woman’s anatomy. His contributions to the orthopedic literature are extensive with over 100 published scientific articles and book chapters in orthopedic medical journals and textbooks. He has also edited several textbooks on sports medicine and knee surgery, and continues to lecture worldwide on reconstructive knee surgery. Dr. Scuderi is a member of several orthopedic and medical organizations, has served on numerous committees, and is the president of the Knee Society for 2012 -2013.
