The new Hillside Hospital Facility opens in October with 88 beds

1946

A local boy's accident inspires a group of local leaders to begin a campaign to open a hospital in the Great Neck area. The group incorporates as the North Shore Memorial Fund in January

The Federation for Jewish Philanthropies, under the direction of Gus Berne, Saul Epstein, and Louis Gertz begins a campaign to open a hospital for Eastern Queens and Western Nassau

1949

The Federation group grows to a 120-member Board of Founders, and launches a fundraising campaign; Federation pledges half a million dollars to the drive

Ground is broken for the new Long Island Jewish Hospital in Glen Oaks, Queens, on land leased from Hillside Hospital

1952

The directors of the four Medical Divisions at North Shore Hospital are named after some controversy; the four men are not from the area, to the consternation of some local physicians

LIJ affiliates with Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn; Downstate residents are sent to LIJ for part of their training

1956

Community Hospital at Glen Cove opens its new School for Practical Nursing, with additional living and classroom space

1957 Construction begins on a major expansion for Southampton Hospital
1943
The Wender Welfare League becomes the Hillside Hospital League
The NSMF, renamed the Great Neck Memorial Fund, purchases a plot in Great Neck from Louise Eldridge, who donates an additional five acres for the proposed facility

North Country Community Hospital opens its School of Practical Nursing to train nursing assistants. Within two years, the School graduated over 50 nurses.

North Shore Hospital opens its doors in July. A private room in the 185-bed facility is available for $22 per day

The NSH Auxiliary is formed

After a 2 year battle with North Shore Hospital over the confusing name similarities, North Country Community Hospital is renamed The Community Hospital at Glen Cove

1957

Community Hospital at Glen Cove opens its new South Wing, increasing bed capacity to 226

1958 Huntington Hospital opens its new East Wing, increasing capacity to 195 beds

The North Country Exchange is incorporated. This charitable organization was exclusively dedicated to North Country Community Hospital in 1949, and by 1960 had donated over $102,000 to the hospital
Staten Island Hospital graduates the final class from its Training School for Nurses 1949 Renamed the North Shore Hospital Fund, the local North Shore group decides to sell the Eldridge property in favor of a more central location. The new site is a 12 acre donation from hospital trustees Jock Whitney and Joan Payson Plans are drawn up for a $1.5 million expansion of the North Country Community Hospital

Hillside Hospital opens a Psychiatric Outpatient Department

1954 Long Island Jewish Hospital opens in May with 215 beds in the five-story structure; it is the first community hospital staffed by full-time directors of service Patients at Hillside Hospital getting some pampering. 1950s? 1956 Expansion plans announced for North Shore Hospital. The $3.6 million additions will include 100 new beds and several new clinics. Comedian Milton Berle and wife Ruth buy a raffle ticket for the North Shore Hospital Fair. 1955

Hillside Hospital creates the Department of Social Services, merging the Social Services and Group Activities Departments.
