LIJ opens the Hearing and Speech Center in conjunction with the Long Island Hearing & Speech Society. It was the first hospital-based center for hearing impairment on Long Island

NSH opens the Rose & Wilfred P. Cohen Extended Care Pavilion, providing 122 beds for continuing and rehabilitative care

1973

NSH is renamed North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) to acknowledge its role as a major academic medical center

Franklin Hospital converts from a privately owned to a community hospital

1976

NSUH opens the ten-story Payson-Whitney Tower, which includes 176 new beds, an auditorium, and an expanded medical library

1962 Community Hopital at Glen Cove opens its new Richard Derby Laboratory, honoring the physician who helped found the hospital and served as Chief of Surgery 1964

LIJ affiliates with the NY City-owned Queens Hospital Center, providing doctors and residents to the 1400-bed facility

1968 LIJ completes its expansion with the opening of four new patient floors, a teaching center, and a Research Building

LaGuardia Hospital opens in Forest Hills, NY

1972

Hillside Hospital merges with LIJ, formalizing the long working relationship between the two institutions

Community Hospital at Glen Cove celebrates its 50th anniversary
