New Cardiac Catheterization Lab Opens at LIJ Medical Center

Return to Heart Health Updates

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – While more than 70 million Americans live with some form of heart disease, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center’s new state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab is a major step forward in the community’s standard of care. The $1.2M project, which took 10 months to construct, is the fifth cath lab at LIJ. It is capable of providing both cardiac and peripheral procedures.

“Our new catheterization lab enables us to help the growing communities of Queens and Long Island battle heart disease, which affects too many Americans,” said Dr. Rajiv Jauhar, director of interventional cardiology at LIJ. “The procedures performed here can be an alternative approach to invasive surgery.”

LIJ performed more than 4,300 cath procedures in 2012, 1,900 patients of whom had radial angioplasties, a procedure which widens narrowed or obstructed arteries.  In the most recent report from the New York State Department of Health covering the period from 2007-2009, LIJ was one of six hospitals statewide that had statistically superior outcomes for angioplasty.

Physicians use cardiac catheterization to determine whether a patient has coronary artery disease. To perform a cardiac catheterization, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel into the heart. Through the catheter, doctors can take blood samples, measure pressures and inject dye into arteries or chambers of the heart to detect narrow paths and blockages.

Catheterizations can be performed using a traditional insertion by entering an artery in the groin or radially by going through the wrist. At LIJ, more than 75 percent of procedures are performed entering an artery in the wrist, which decreases complications and allows for a quicker recovery.
