Return to Heart Health Updates
September 06, 2011
BAY SHORE, NY – Earlier this year, the North Shore-LIJ Health System extended its cardiac surgery program to Southside Hospital, making Southside the first open-heart surgical program on Suffolk County’s south shore. Now, on the heels of the historic and successful implementation of that program, Southside has further enhanced its cardiac capabilities with the opening of a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room (OR). The hybrid OR allows complex cases, which may require a combination of procedures from multiple specialists, to be completed in a single operating room.
“The hybrid OR consists of a full complement of equipment that equals or exceeds a cardiac catheterization lab and general operating room combined,” said Steve Bello, administrative director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Southside. “The hybrid name reflects the ability to use the room as an interventional suite, operating room, or both. Any conceivable procedure can be performed here which is a benefit to both physician and patient. Our ability to integrate the services of cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, complex endovascular trauma and interventional cardiology will provide unique opportunities for multiple physicians to collaborate in the care of our patients”
Alan Hartman, MD, the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s chair of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, who heads Southside’s cardiac surgery program, explained that one of the main features of Southside’s hybrid OR is advanced imaging technology supported by the Siemens Zeego system. The Zeego system provides real-time three-dimensional imaging -- the equivalent of an instantaneous computed tomography (CT) scan, which aids physicians in their diagnoses and treatment of cardiac, vascular and thoracic disease.
“Percutaneous aortic valve replacement - one of the procedures commonly performed in hybrid ORs - is an example of how the model works,” Dr. Hartman said. “If needed, the room can immediately shift into a fully equipped cardiac operating room so cardiac surgery can be performed. The patient does not need to be moved to a separate operating room and any issues can be addressed immediately.” For physicians, he said, the hybrid OR is the latest advanced technology which allows for improved imaging, greater clinical options and better quality care for complex cases.
“The addition of the hybrid OR continues the hospital’s long-standing commitment of service to the community and expands Southside’s growing investment of cardiac services and our evolution into a tertiary care facility,” said Winnie Mack, RN, executive director of Southside Hospital.
Southside was the first community hospital in New York State to receive state Department of Health approval to perform percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or elective angioplasty in 2006. The extension of North Shore-LIJ’s cardiac surgery program to Southside this past February and the addition of the hybrid OR is part of a four-year $300-million investment the North Shore-LIJ Health System is making to establish Southside as the health system’s first tertiary facility in Suffolk County.
