Patient Safety Institute
The Patient Safety Institute (PSI) at North Shore-LIJ is one of the country’s largest multidisciplinary simulation centers. The institute uses computerized mannequins to simulate a range of high-risk medical scenarios, such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest and other life-threatening conditions. Using simulation labs, healthcare professionals are placed in various clinical settings (an operating room, a labor-and-delivery suite, a procedure room and eight critical care rooms) to develop their clinical and communication skills in a realistic hospital setting without risk to real patients.
Center for Learning and Innovation
The Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI) is the health system’s corporate university. The center is nationally recognized for workforce development and provides continuous organizational learning at every level. All employees are encouraged to take a class to help develop skills related to their profession.
North Shore-LIJ has developed a teamwork system that improves communication and teamwork among healthcare professionals. More than 20,000 care providers have been trained in the TeamSTEEPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) approach, which has proven to improve patient outcomes.
