Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac Catheterization – Diagnostic & Therapeutic
The cardiac catheterization laboratory at Cohen Children’s Medical Center performs diagnostic and therapeutic catheterizations in our state of the art catheterization laboratory. Diagnostic cardiac catheterizations can provide detailed information about complex cardiac anatomy and heart function. As well, many heart problems that once required surgery can now be addressed in a nonsurgical manner, using cardiac catheterization. A catheter (a very narrow tube) is placed in a vein or artery and advanced into the heart and blood vessels.
Therapeutic catheterization procedures include:
- Dilation of narrowed heart valves
- Dilation and stenting of narrowed arteries and veins
- Closure of extra connections in the heart, such as ASD or PDA
