Outpatient Consultation Services
An outpatient cardiology consultation includes a complete cardiac evaluation by a board certified physician who specializes in the care of infants and children with known or suspected heart disease. Our doctors strive to provide outstanding care to children born with heart disease, as well as those who develop heart disease during childhood at the Children's Heart Center at Cohen Children's Medical Center or at one of our consultation centers.
Some children who are suspected or known to have certain types of cardiovascular disease may benefit from evaluation in one of our specialized consultation programs, which include:
- Arrhythmia consultations
- Marfan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Genetics Program
- Cardiomyopathy Screening Program
Arrhythmia Consultations
An arrhythmia consultation is an evaluation by our pediatric electrophysiologist, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias, which are abnormalities of the heart rhythm. An arrhythmia consultation may be recommended for children with palpitations, fast and irregular heartbeats, syncope (or fainting) or exercise intolerance.
Children with pacemakers and/or internal defibrillators (ICDs) are also evaluated by our pediatric electrophysiologist and a pacemaker technician to ensure the appropriate functioning of their devices.
Outpatient arrhythmia consultations are offered at the Children's Heart Center at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, as well as at the Consultation Center in Brooklyn.
Marfan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Genetics Program
The Marfan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Genetics Program offers the unique opportunity for patients with known or suspected Marfan syndrome to be evaluated in an interdisciplinary consultation by a pediatric cardiologist and a medical geneticist during a single office visit. Evaluation by the Marfan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Genetics Program may be recommended by your child's pediatrician, a pediatric cardiologist or another subspecialty physician caring for your child. Our doctors may recommend additional consultations with pediatric ophthalmologists, pediatric orthopedic surgeons and other subspecialists whose expertise are essential for the care of these children.
The Marfan Syndrome and Cardiovascular Genetics Program offers outpatient consultations at the Children's Heart Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
Cardiomyopathy Screening Program
The Cardiomyopathy Screening Program provides outpatient consultations for children who may be at risk of developing a cardiomyopathy, which is an abnormality in the heart muscle. A pediatric cardiologist provides a thorough assessment with history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram looking for early signs of cardiomyopathy. Evaluation in the Cardiomyopathy Screening Program may be recommended for children with certain genetic, metabolic, rheumatologic, renal (kidney) and hematologic (blood) diseases, as well as children who have received chemotherapy or have a family history of cardiomyopathy.
The Cardiomyopathy Screening Program offers outpatient consultations at the Children's Heart Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
Physicians may also request urgent outpatient consultations at the Children's Heart Center.
