Cardiac electrophysiologic studies help to determine the details of the electrical activity of the heart and may be useful in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm abnormalities. This is a test which is performed while the patient is asleep and involves the placement of electrodes in the heart through small catheters (small plastic tubes) which are placed in blood vessels (often in the leg and/or the neck). Electrical activity of the heart can be measured and abnormal heart rhythms can be diagnosed. In addition, this study may be combined with "ablation", which can treat the abnormal heart rhythm during this same procedure.
